Join us for our October Chapter meeting.  Karen Shannon, Vice President of Business Consulting/CHRO for Ollis/Akers/Arney will speaking about FMLA/ADA.  This seminar will assist participants in identifying how the FMLA and ADA work together and why it is important to consider accommodation requests.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible employees for covered employers unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continued health coverage as if they were active employees.  With COVID-19, there are additional situations in which an employee may qualify for job-protected leave with the Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act.

Covered employers must also comply the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which prohibits discrimination against an employee and job candidate with disabilities and requires employers to make reasonable accommodations unless they impose an undue hardship on the employer. When the Act was amended in 2008 it expanded the definition of a disability to include actual or perceived physical or mental impairment whether or not the impairment limits or is perceived to limit a major life activity.

It is important that employers harmonize their leave and reasonable accommodations policies. Having a pre-determined maximum leave policy or return to work policy with no restrictions can be problematic. Reasonable accommodations can take many forms, depending on the needs of the individual.

Karen has served in senior leadership positions in banking and human resources for over 30 years.  She and her team provided HR services to 5,000 employees across the US, United Kingdom, India and Mexico.  Today, she works with world-wide clients on key business and HR strategies which have resulted in cost savings upward of $7 million.

Karen received her MBA and BA in Business Administration and Economics from Drury University.  She is a graduate of Leadership Missouri, past president of the Junior League, and was appointed to the Board of Trustees for banker education for the Missouri Bankers Association. She has served on the Board of Directors for numerous organizations and is a regular presenter at national and regional conferences. Karen was recognized in 2000 by the Springfield Business Journal in its inaugural class of the Most Influential Women in Business.
